Atlanta would be neutral site for Bills-Chiefs AFC title game.

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. -- A potential AFC Championship Game between the No. 2-seeded Buffalo Bills and No. 1-seeded Kansas City Chiefs would take place in Atlanta at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, the NFL announced Thursday.
The game would take place at 6:30 p.m. ET on Sunday, Jan. 29. All other potential AFC Championship Game matchups would take place at the home stadium of the higher seed, the league said.
The fact that a potential Bills-Chiefs matchup would be played at a neutral site was already known, but the league had yet to disclose where that location would be. The NFL last week approved a neutral site because of the inequities created by the cancellation of the Week 17 game between the Bills and Cincinnati Bengals as a result of Bills safety Damar Hamlin collapsing on the field and going into cardiac arrest after making a tackle.
Hamlin was released from a hospital Wednesday and is recovering at his home in Buffalo with his family.
"Nothing was going to be fair for anybody, I don't think. It's a situation that we never have encountered before," Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes said Monday regarding a site for the potential matchup. "But at the end of the day, I was so happy that Damar was doing better, and that's the most important stuff.
"And so him doing better and him being in a better spot, we were ready to do whatever scenario was going to happen. So if that was neutral site, if that was going there [to Buffalo], whatever it was, we were just ready to go out there and play. But we have to win that first game first, so let's worry about whoever we play in that first round, or that first round for us."
The Chiefs have a first-round bye and will host the lowest seed remaining in the AFC divisional round on Jan. 21 or Jan. 22. The Bills open the postseason against the Miami Dolphins at 1 p.m. ET Sunday.
The neutral site will be used only if both the Chiefs and Bills advance that far, as it was decided by the league that the two teams participating would have to have played an unequal number of games, and both could have been the No. 1 seed had all AFC clubs played a full 17-game regular season.
The Bills played only 16 games. Had the Bills-Bengals game been played as expected and the Bills won the final two games of the regular season, they would have earned the No. 1 seed by virtue of a tiebreaker and had a bye this week.
We are heartened by the continued improvement and progress of Damar Hamlin in his recovery, and Damar and his family remain top of mind for the entire NFL community," NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said in a statement. "We are also grateful to Arthur Blank and the Atlanta Falcons for agreeing to host the AFC Championship Game in Atlanta should the Bills and Chiefs advance. We thank both of those clubs for their assistance in the planning process."
As part of standard NFL contingency planning, Atlanta had already been designated as a possible backup host site for postseason games before the start of the 2022 season. The city is almost equidistant from both potential participating teams' cities.

Wouldn't shock me if the NFL tries to get alll conf title games on a neutral field in some climate controlled conditions in the future.

I dunno if they could get away with that without fan pushback but if they could, they would.

I am thinking the backlash would be too great.

What about the Bills vs the Bengals next week?

Bengals were on pace to beat them, yet no coin flip?

Anyone know what the brilliant Roger was thinking? Reward Buffalo, but punish Cincy?

Only a Roger can spin this

Just another interim step that probably will be the standard going forward (championship games at sterile neutral sites. All a pre-cursor for a pay-per-view Super Bowl.

I think the difference was KC got an advantage which was the bye
KC 1/2 game up ...but Bills could get both bye and home advantage so they split it and gave the bye but no home advantage
Bills have a 1 game advantage over Cincy. While a case can be made for neutral field it can also be made for Bills at home since they would play each other it could be Bengals same record and tie breaker but also Bills 2 games up. I think it is actually the most fair thing to give Bills the home game than a neutral site but not by much

As far as neutral site Conference finals. Not only do I think the NFl doesn't want it the fans obviously don't
Take out the fun of a home crowd and the weather
They wait all year for that game to cheer to get their team into the Super Bowl
NFL would bedumb as fuck to even suggest it
I don't believe they want it at all

Agree

But easier to justify since Bills and Bengals played same amount of games/Bills had better record. That is unjust in my opinion, but at least rational

Part of me thinks they're punishing Bengals for not trying to continue playing/forcing Bills to forfeit, though that may be a reach

There's no difference Roger, don't be a contortionist

He wanted to favor the Bills, and that's that

One of the reasons you get season tickets is to hit the lotto if the team makes the conf title game. Either to keep or sell, you get it at the value of the regular season games (atleast it has been this way for awhile)

So there would definitely be backlash, but I’m sure the nfl would love for it to be similar to conf title games in CFB. Cities bidding for the game, suites, corporate, fans of both teams descending.

Maybe they can’t get away with it but I’m sure they would if they could.

Atlanta? Really?

Atlanta is a massive shit hole of a city. It's full of nig nogs and crime. Why would anyone visit or even live in a shitty black city?

Great answer Ray sounds like you never moved out of the tee pee at the KOA camp ground. Did your mom at least buy you a new pair of flip flops so you can’t spread your fungus

Bills were on pace to a three seed, Roger made them a 1A

And rules don't matter, it's a touchy feely sorta thing.

Didn't MLB pull their all-star game out of Georgia because of racist voting laws? LMFAO at the asswipes who buy and sell this nonsense

I'm really not, weren't going anywhere this year. I want to make sure they make changes, looks like Patricia is out as OC so I'm cool

I'm serious, I think the Bengals got fucked. Roger changed the rules for the title game, why doesn't the same reasoning apply?

If the Ravens won last week, he would have had a coin flip to decide who hosts this weeks playoff game. So he changes the rules twice, both times screwing the Bengals, and is simply inconsistent in his rulings

Sorta bizarre from where I'm sitting

PS: My skin is thick, too much success for me to really complain. Let other fan bases have some fun :).

I do want the GOAT to get one more before he retires

I explained why it is different
IMO if you make that neutral it is worse than giving the BIlls home advantage but not by a lot
Yes, Bengals had a chance to get 2 seed and the home game if they played and beat Bills. Bills also had the opportuniy to be up 2 games having beat them
With Bills and KC Bills not only had a chance at home advantage but a bye and they beat KC already not might beat them if they played. They did beat them
And they gave KC the advantage of the bye. Bills would have got essentially no advantage had they played that on neutral feld
You don't see the difference?

I think you can make the argument that if bengals face bills it could have either been a coin flip or neutral. But at the same time if bengals are meant to be there then the field they play on is irrelevant. The real problem here is they hadn’t ever dealt with this before. Has the nfl said how they will handle this god forbid a similar situation was to happen in playoffs.?

I got an idea, you want to help your odds of winning it all? Don’t open the season with losses to Trubisky and Rush

Navigating various obstacles is part of becoming the champs. Bad calls, bad injuries, bad kickers.

The futures odds barely changed because this isn’t that big of a deal, in-game events change win probability way more

Goes for Bills as well, who were the ones most affected by odds by losing the bye.

Not like venue even matters much anymore, all these teams play the same way.
